LIVING LIFE LEARNING

It is with great excitement that I acknowledge my  acceptance into a 9-month training program to learn about facilitating compassionate care partnership.  This program is offered by NY Zen Center on The Foundations for Compassionate Care. Open to people of all faiths, this study will give me a heart-based foundation in the principles both practical and spiritual on caring, supporting and providing contemplative practices with chronically ill people, some of whom will transition through death of their physical body. This class will allow me to hone my Guidance inspired technique into skills suitable for professional environments.

During almost 6 years of managing living with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer I  have been  in a close and personal relationship with the Divine. I have been comforted through the Divine and through the Divine I have been shown grace, wisdom and peace.  My experience has shown me that I can hold my personal power through the challenges.  I can hold my beliefs and the sacredness of a devotional lifestyle through this experience.  And, most importantly I can be caring, available and tolerant of those around me  no matter what is going on within my body.  Cancer is an effect it is not the cause of anything that is happening my life right now.  Cancer has expanded me and taught me. It is my deep desire to meet people where they are at and support them.  I know that I am uniquely suited to guide individuals through an empathic discovery during these uncertain times of unknowing.

These are the four activations that have been the foundation for my personal contemplative lifestyle:

I BREATHE

As I breathe I create an awareness of self that is sacred

and intimately personal.

I SIT

As I sit in contemplation I am present for myself

and honor my feelings.

I PRAY

As I speak every word is a prayer of confirmation,

care and consideration.

I LIVE

As I live I honor and support myself through inward reflection

and outward discretion.

AREAS OF STUDY & EXPERIENCE BASED LEARNING

Together we learn to meet fear and discomfort with courageous compassion

Foundations in Contemplative Care is a transformational 9-month training for integrating spiritual practice with care. Since 2007, the program has supported people from around the world in bringing a contemplative approach to care into their intrapersonal, interpersonal and professional lives.

  • Practicing greater intimacy and care in both the intra and interpersonal relationships through active and symbolic listening, verbal and nonverbal communication, having courageous conversations, and non-judgmental moment-by-moment awareness
  • Learning how contemplative practices support caring for others in the full spectrum of life, including those who are experiencing critical life transitions, illness, dying, grief and loss
  • Employing spiritual assessment to bring greater awareness to our own and others suffering and how we can alleviate it
  • Exploring healthy boundaries, ethics of conduct, and personal safety and well-being in care work
  • Cultivating resilience through the mutual support of community, expressing our own agency, and meaning making
  • Holding space and creating and facilitating rituals and memorials as a contemplative care partner
  • Learning how to support others who do care work—including healthcare staff and family care partners—in their resiliency.

Experiential Learning

    • Live weekend trainings each month, which can be attended in-person or online
    • An online curriculum consisting of recorded video teachings, readings, community discussion, and reflective writing
    • Support through mentorship

PLEASE CONSIDER HOSTING ME AT YOUR ORGANIZATION

My coursework at The NY Zen Center for Contemplative Care  includes 50 hours of practical experience. These hours are offered on a volunteer basis.  These are no fees charged to either the organization or its clients.  I must find an organization that will allow me to do this practicum at independent organizations, here in Las Vegas, under the supervision of The Zen Center's instructors.  I am really hoping that I will be able to do some online work because as I have gone through the real experience of medicine related side effects, I found it impractical and impossible to be in a physical location.

If you have any suggestions and/or contacts I would greatly appreciate an introduction.

  • The New York Zen Center has provided me with a letter of introduction.
  • Through Sacred Qi I have a Clark County Business License and would be happy to present this as well.
  • The NYZC and Clark County Business Division conduct background checks to qualify for participation and licensing.
